"I used to joke that I was born in the wrong timeline. I wanted to experience the Renaissance, to witness the birth of some of the world's most influential fashion houses, and to see the artistry that would go on to shape luxury as we know it today."

Luxury is more than a designer label, it's craftsmanship, history, and culture. For Bazic Instinct Co-Founder and Chief Compliance Officer Yaneik Johnson, traveling to some of the world's fashion capitals has only deepened her appreciation for the artistry behind luxury brands.

We sat down with Yaneik to talk about the inspiration behind Bazic Instinct, her role in the company, and why fashion has always been much more than a career, it's a lifelong passion.

Q: Milan is often described as the heart of Italian fashion. What was it like experiencing the city through your own lens?

Yaneik Johnson:

Milan is one of those places you simply have to experience for yourself.

Ever since I was a little girl, visiting Italy was a dream of mine. I remember sitting in art history class, completely captivated by the Renaissance, daydreaming about walking these very streets centuries ago. I used to joke that I was born in the wrong era because I wanted to witness the birth of some of the world's most iconic luxury houses and experience that extraordinary period of creativity firsthand.

Standing in Milan, I realized that in many ways, that history is still alive.

Fashion is everywhere, but it never feels manufactured or performative. It's woven into the architecture, the cafés, the craftsmanship, and the rhythm of everyday life. You can feel that people here genuinely value beautiful design, not because it's trendy, but because it's part of their culture.

Walking through the city reminded me that true luxury isn't created overnight. It's built over generations through tradition, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Whether you're looking at the Duomo, a beautifully tailored jacket in a storefront, or the details on a handcrafted leather bag, the same philosophy exists: create something meaningful enough to stand the test of time.

As someone who has always loved both fashion and travel, Milan reminded me why I fell in love with luxury fashion in the first place. It isn't just about owning beautiful things. It's about understanding the history, appreciating the craftsmanship, and recognizing the stories that make those pieces timeless.

Q: Fashion seems to be more than a business for you. What does it represent personally?

Yaneik Johnson:

Fashion has never just been something I wear, it's been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I grew up surrounded by creativity. My mother owned a clothing boutique, and she had an incredible eye for detail. Whether she was selecting pieces for her store or choosing furniture and décor for our home, everything was intentional. She taught me that beautiful design isn't accidental, t's thoughtful.

My father expressed his creativity differently. He was known for his bold, distinctive style, and he encouraged me to explore my own creativity. He taught me how to sketch, and how to scarp book. Looking back, those moments were some of my earliest lessons in visual storytelling.

Creativity wasn't limited to fashion in our home. It was woven into everything from art, music, to photography and design. I was so inspired by that environment that I originally changed my college major to art because I dreamed of becoming an artist and photographer.

I think that's why I experience luxury differently.

When I look at a handbag, I don't just see leather, hardware, or a designer's name. I notice the texture of the materials, the precision of the craftsmanship, the vision behind the design, and the history of the fashion house that created it. I'm always asking myself, What inspired this piece? What story is it trying to tell?

That's one of the reasons I love luxury resale so much.

These aren't disposable products, they're works of craftsmanship. They were designed to be cherished, carried, and passed on. Every pre-owned piece has a story before it reaches us, and it's exciting to know that, through Bazic Instinct, it gets to begin a new chapter with someone who will appreciate it all over again..

Q: How has traveling influenced your vision for Bazic Instinct?

Yaneik Johnson:

Travel has completely transformed my perspective on what luxury truly means.

Before I started traveling, I think I viewed luxury the way many people in America are taught to view it, as something exclusive, something difficult to attain, or simply something you acquire. But experiencing different cultures challenged that idea.

Every country has its own interpretation of luxury. In some places, luxury is exceptional craftsmanship passed down through generations. In others, it's the beauty of slowing down to enjoy a meal, walking through centuries old architecture, or surrounding yourself with thoughtful design. I realized that luxury isn't always about owning more—it's about experiencing life more deeply.

To me, luxury is a state of mind. It's choosing quality over quantity, appreciating craftsmanship, valuing convenience, and surrounding yourself with things that bring joy, purpose, and meaning. That's something no price tag can define.

Travel also taught me that luxury is inseparable from culture. Every destination tells its own story through its artisans, architecture, traditions, and fashion. Those experiences have changed the way I look at every piece we curate at Bazic Instinct.

When I return home, I don't come back looking for the next trend. I come back with a deeper appreciation for timeless design and the stories behind the brands we carry. My hope is that every customer who shops with Bazic Instinct finds more than a beautiful handbag—they find a piece that resonates with them, reflects their personal style, and becomes part of their own journey.

Q: As Chief Compliance Officer, your title isn't what most people expect in fashion. What does your role actually look like?

Yaneik Johnson:

It definitely surprises people. When they hear "Chief Compliance Officer," they usually think of healthcare or finance—not luxury fashion.

But in luxury resale, trust is everything.

I oversee our operational compliance, risk management, and many of the behind-the-scenes processes that protect both our customers and our brand. I also help shape our editorial content, represent Bazic Instinct through media opportunities, and create educational content that helps customers shop with confidence.

I wear both the business and creative hats, and I love that balance. Everything I do comes back to one goal: building trust. I want every customer to know they're shopping with a company that values authenticity, transparency, and the craftsmanship behind every piece.

Q: What do you hope people feel when they discover Bazic Instinct?

Yaneik Johnson:

I hope they feel inspired and, most importantly, confident.

I want people to know that we genuinely care about every purchase they make and that they can trust us to deliver authentic luxury with honesty and transparency.

Whether someone is purchasing their very first designer bag or adding a rare piece to an established collection, I want the experience to feel personal, educational, and exciting.

Luxury shouldn't feel intimidating, it should feel welcoming.

Every piece we curate is selected because we believe in its craftsmanship, authenticity, and timeless appeal. We're not just selling handbags; we're helping people discover pieces they'll cherish and create new memories with for years to come.

Q: Finally, where is your passport taking you next—and how do you hope those journeys shape the future of Bazic Instinct?

Yaneik Johnson:

I never travel simply to check a destination off a list.

I travel to immerse myself in the culture, discover new perspectives, and learn from the people and places around me. Every city has its own story to tell, and every journey gives me a deeper appreciation for creativity, craftsmanship, and the traditions that make each destination unique.

As Bazic Instinct continues to grow, I hope our customers travel with us, not just through the places we visit, but through the vision behind our brand. We travel the world to source exceptional finds, build relationships with trusted vendors, and discover pieces that aren't just beautiful, but meaningful.

My hope is that every collection reflects the inspiration we've gathered along the way and allows our customers to own a piece of that journey.
